Small spaces have great potential when it comes to house interior design. Make more room while giving each space your unique design expression by applying these 7 rules the pros use!

1. Slim Down – Get a large box, basket or bag and sift through those small accents. Too many little things sitting around a small room will clog of the room’s space quickly. It’s amazing how much air space you will create by being super specific about what you have placed on table tops and shelves.

2. Trim Down – Heavy, bulky window treatments not only block the limited light in your small room but are also space hoggers. Free those windows by using shades, blinds or even shutters. There are some gorgeous options to be made or purchased at your favorite house interior design store. Have a little extra money to spend, have your blinds custom designed in fabrics that compliment the rest of your room’s decor.

3. Color Down – Though a variety of color breaks up a large house, too much color in a small one will work against your already limited amount of space. It is best to paint all the walls one color or use a similar pallet hue for small subtle changes from room to room.

4. Lighten Up – Pull in that limited light with the use of mirrors positioned directly across from a window. Use semi gloss paint to reflect the light and keep your furniture polished and your appliances clean.

5. Fabric Up – It is better to fabric up your accents and leave the large furniture pieces to solids. If you already have a busy couch with a floral print, shapes or strips, consider toning things down a bit with a slip cover. Then, bring in those extra fabrics in your accents to provide some visual depth and emotional interest. Have fun with this part of your house interior design project!

Bring in those weaves, patterns, and quilted fabrics for this.

6. Liven Up – Nothing says open space and health like fresh plants placed around a room. Potted plants are preferred but bountiful bouquets regularly freshened up will also work well.

Limited for room? Positioning a potted plant in front of the fireplace mantle during the warmest time of the year is a great use of that space. Angle your furniture and use the extra space to display an indoor tree or palm.

7. Step Up – Light bare wood is always the best and beautiful of option for giving a small room a larger appearance. Flooring in an apartment cannot be changed but it can be changed up! Place a lighter area rug on top of the existing carpet. Or in the case of a dark linoleum find a light bamboo or Berber to bring out the light.

Today, we are going to be discussing about a home interior that is not so typical within the context of the Singapore house. One of the areas that are not so common is the dark interior design, being such a sunny country that we are, but there has been a resurgence of late for the Gothic and classical interior design, and today, we will be focusing a little on how this has come up and the kinds of areas and representations that has come about because of this. While this is not a comprehensive look at the design area, we will be touching on some of the trends in Gothic home interior, and from there, maybe even answer the question which begs the demand of such a thing nowadays. For all concerns, what is going to happen is how you are going to be able to understand the area of this, and how you are going to be able to recognize the Gothic design in the first place. Interestingly enough, this is one of the most oldest and the most archaic design influences in the world today, and because of that, it is a point of interest to why it has become more and more popular in the Singapore landscape today.

For one thing, what we need to know about of course is how you are going to identify this. In the end, the one thing that you must know is that the whole concept of Gothic is not just limited to evil figurines and dark velvet or massive chandeliers; these are just age old concepts that seem to be tied into the whole Gothic genre. For one, Gothic is about the subliminal and the mind boggling, and this can translate to stuff like stone figures in and around the place, very detailed and very 18th century, Now, you might notice a play on velvet colors, maybe more black, and that lighting is used much more strategically in these houses. Of course, you cannot assume that just adding a little black is going to make a house Gothic, it has to be used subtly, and it has to dominate the mind more than the eyes. In the end of the day, one of the things that are truly Gothic is an impressive centrepiece within the house that can really be anything, from a table to a piano – but it has to dominate the space and seem almost alive in its presence within the house.

These are some of the things that might constitute as Gothic home interior, and of course, we are not going to simply look to the Addams family for inspiration. Nor is Anne Rice, or her famed vampire going to be walking around, just to make things a little more Gothic and a little more sinister. Gothic is about a lifestyle and a statement, a subtle nudge in a dark direction that should immerse the room in deep colors and an even deeper, sublime mindset.

Deciding to change the interior design of your home could sometimes be a daunting task. Often though the problem is solved once you exactly know the look and the “feel” of the home that you would finally want to have.
Whatever the look of the interior design of the home that you have decided, the following are common and helpful guides that are for consideration if you must succeed in the interior design the interior of the house.

Choosing the color of the Interior Design

The color that the interior of the house is to have will determine the final ambience that a room is going to take together with the coordination of all the accessories and furniture therein. Remember also that whatever colors you must choose you will have to live with that particular space for quite a while. For this, professional interior designers and artists always consult a color board. Color boards are excellent tools for determining color preferences and color coordination. Using a color board could cut down the time that it takes researching from magazines, books and catalogues.

Creating Illusion of Space in Interior Design

There are several tricks at doing this though most have to do with how you play with light and lighting. The principle is light colors tends to make a room look larger while darker hues give the appearance of spaces being limited. So let in as much natural light as possible. If the room is small color it in brighter lighter hues. Use freely artificial lighting. An old age trick is to use mirrors especially in small rooms to create the illusion in the interior design that the space is larger than it actually is. Accessories that seem to float, chairs with longer legs, the use of transparent/translucent objects helps further the creation illusion of space.

Create a focal point in Interior Design

Focal point is the item or furniture in a room where you want the attention set. It is very important to create a focal point in a room or a space from which every design consideration, every artwork, and every piece has to revolve. Without a focal point, the room will not have a solid feel to it. Without it, unity and coordination of design will be lost no matter how beautiful or expensive the pieces are. Focal points could be a fireplace, a painting, a view from a room or just a precious beautiful thing where you would want the attention focused on. When highlight is created, it is much simpler to design the entire room or space.

Do not over stuff

One of the most common errors in decorating is the temptation to display all the beautiful stuff collected over the years. Space really is very expensive. When there is too much detail and decorations in an interior design, living space is compromised aside from making the room look heavy, stuffy, and uncoordinated and when unchecked, even the most beautiful pieces losses its luster and position of importance. A good interior design practice is to avoid cluttering up a space. When accessorizing, choose only those that coordinates very well with the entire concept, experiment with doing with less and you will be surprised by the effect that it will make aside from saving you a lot of spaces.

I understand that many people do not have the luxury of living in large spaces. Not even if you have the money to burn! Come on, new houses are getting smaller by the day, and even private houses are not spared these days. But for those who are lucky enough to reside in larger spaces, there can be a lot of challenges in terms of design and layout too. If things are not done quite right, the space may just overwhelm you and makes you feel extremely uncomfortable.

Based on my (humble) opinion, the first step is to break up the entire space into sections and create the feeling of a series of functional zones that link to each other cohesively. For instance, designate an area in the living room for TV watching and another as a casual work corner, linking to a third zone – complete with settees and all – for spending some quiet moments with guests who pop over. Put on your thinking cap and put up screens or partitions to break the space up where suitable.

Next, consider setting up several points of interest in the room. The TV is obviously one. Other focal spots could be a display unit on the other side, or simply something like an oversized lamp shade. If not, an artwork or a mirror on the wall will also do the trick. Meanwhile, I can’t stress enough how handy area rugs will come in, especially in a house where floor area is ample.

Yet, while you are doing all these, remember not to lose your insanity and congest the space with too many furniture pieces too. Leaving some empty spaces in a room is still necessary, and its importance cannot be ignored.

Trends are often considered the pieces you buy one year and throw out the next, when they’re no longer gracing the pages of your favourite shelter magazine. Although not every trend is fleeting, for example, going green was hailed as one of the hottest trends. Now it is becoming a standard throughout the design industry.

Today, survey is made to gather the top tips and trends in interior design for 2010. Retail design for businesses has also been considered.

Layered flooring

Layering floor coverings adds richness and warmth. It was suggested that “overlapping several smaller, lightweight rugs with patterns and colors that are complementary – a striped runner on top of a larger geometric rug – or overlapping multiples of the same rug in a variety of colors.” Those with wall-to-wall carpeting can still get in on this trend. Place “a rug over existing carpet for an instant splash of color or pattern,” said Incerty. “This is a great trick for avoiding the hassle and expense of ripping out existing carpeting when you want an update.”

Bolder design decisions

“In the last year, people were looking to be calmed and comforted by interiors,” said Melanie Coddington, right, who was recently named one of House Beautiful’s 20 interior designers to watch. “I hope the burgeoning sense of optimism will translate into sparkle, glamour and lots of risk-taking in design. Go with the bold color!”

Palette

Speaking of color, Melanie Coddington is “having a purple moment that will continue into 2010,” she noted. “Gray also continues to figure largely as well – in particular purple and gray, yellow and gray, and matte and shiny gray together are great combinations.” Fellow interior designer Kimberly Ayres concurred: “Gray is the new beige,” she said, adding that she anticipates “rich and unexpected combinations – like gray with teal or magenta or tangerine. It’s a very mercurial color.”

Real Stuff

Forget faux. (No more fake antlers, please!) In 2010, we want to see a movement toward the natural patina of woods, metals and other materials. We don’t even mind a water mark or a hint of rust. After all, those imperfections may be the result of generations of wear and come with a good story or two.

Mix it up

“In general, I see a trend to a carefully edited ‘anything goes’ approach,” said Ayres. “Going forward in 2010, it’s all about the mix and how you combine individual, disparate elements. The right classic 19th century piece will mix with certain vintage finds from the ’70s and ’80s and with pieces designed this year.” She added, “Graphic modern print textiles work with traditional chairs and sofas.”

Make your business stand out with trends that are here to stay. Keep in mind that whether it is home interior design, or retail design, or restaurant design, one must consider if the pattern you are looking is fleeting or a real classic.

So you want some decorating interior design tips to improve your home? Today, many people want to redesign their houses in order to match their personalities and lifestyles.

Unfortunately, how many people never take action to achieve the decorating interior designing want, simply because they believe it’s too expensive. Actually, when you do it the right way, redesigning your home’s interior can be very affordable, not to mention rewarding.

Think about it: you spend so much time in your house, doesn’t it make sense to have a home design you want? And yet, so many people simply survive the interior their homes, because they believe it would cost much to change it. You spend so much time inside your house, if you like your home interior design, it can really do wonders for your mood.

Here’s an important step in finding the design materials you will need at a discounted price. First of all, checking outlets around you that may be selling materials for wholesale prices. Simply, when you start out in a retail store, you will be paying as high a price you can possibly pay for materials that you could really get much cheaper otherwise, and probably for just as good quality. Also, check any discount stores around you.

Next up, check the Internet. The Internet literally has millions of results for virtually any topic you are considering getting more information on. In fact, you can literally check out hundreds of different decorating interior design sites in a very short time.

This will help you to find out exactly what kind materials you will need, and how expensive they will be. Not to mention the fact that on the Internet, you can generally find much better bargains online than you ever will be able to find off-line.

Another common question people ask when doing interior design is that whether or not they should do it themselves. Of course, this answer will be different for everybody. Quite simply, you need to ask yourself whether you know enough about the material you’ll be changing in order to do yourself.

For instance, if you know a lot about your kitchen interior design, but you are forced to redesign your bedroom, you might consider hiring a decorating interior design professional, as they will know much more about the topic than you. You can often times end up paying much more money by trying to do it yourself and making many mistakes, as opposed to simply by hiring somebody in the first place who knows what they’re doing and will do right the first time over. Hopefully, these decorating interior design tips will help you a great deal in deciding whether to tackle that next home design project.

The bathroom is one of the most neglected rooms in the house when it comes to looking its best. This room is often thought of as needing to be practical, rather than pretty. Fortunately, bathroom interior design can be simply and easily improved upon without sacrificing utility. Attractive custom storage can help to reduce clutter in your bathroom, keeping your important toiletries and cleaning supplies neatly out of sight.

Hotel inspired bathrooms can give the feeling of get-away luxury without ever leaving home. Good lighting, clean lines, and marble surfaces make the bathroom attractive and uncluttered. A large mirror can expand the appearance of space. Other bathroom interior design ideas for a hotel-styled bathroom include monogrammed towels, attractive wallpaper, and crisp design elements.

When the bathroom is used and who will be using it will inform your bathroom interior design choices. A public powder room will be able to be more whimsical or dramatic, whereas a family bath must be more practical. Guest baths should create a welcoming and inviting space for people away from home. A master bathroom should encourage relaxation.

Be careful to choose materials that will not be damaged by water and humidity for your bathroom interior design. Wallpaper can be used in some bathrooms, but in other, the high humidity can cause it to peel and fall off. Tile is a popular choice for a bathroom, but can be damaged if your bathroom is high traffic. A good substitute for traditional tiles is vinyl tile, which can look just like ceramic or marble, but is not as easily broken. Wood cabinets are popular as well, but again, you should be careful to make sure they will not be susceptible to water damage. Wood can swell, warp, and crack in humid environments.

The right shower or tub is important in bathroom interior design. You should choose one that fits your needs, is easily cleaned, and will not be damaged easily if your bathroom sees a lot of use. Acrylic is a good choice for these situations. Traditional fiberglass is light weight, but can be easily scratched. Cast iron and cultured marble provide timeless looks, but are heavy and can be expensive. They may also require extra support under the bathroom floor. Also, try to be sure that your tub or shower is proportioned for the people who are using it. Very tall people may be frustrated by a low shower head. It is important to adjust your bathroom interior design ideas for the people who will be using the room.

Take Away All Interior Design Ideas

Why should the interior design of your home be any different from anyone else’s? It could be so much easier to simply follow the crowd and show no fear about a lack of originality if every home was pre-packaged with a unit appearance. Here are some ideas to keep the interior of your home as conformist as you can, and perhaps these will allow you the simple peace of a non-designed house.

First – please be sure to remove all coordination from your home. Recent studies have shown that balancing the cloth of your living room upholstery to the window and floor treatments can spark sensations of appreciation and pleasure in household members and guests. It is therefore critical for the practicing conformist to remove all hints of matching or complimentary designs from his or her household.

After dealing with those messy matching issues, be sure to walk through the rest of the interior searching for original art pieces such as paintings, sculpture and folk art. An interior which includes originality in their wall décor would evoke a sense of personality and interest in guest of the home, and it should also be noted that these guests might then find themselves assuming the “good taste” of their host. That defeats the purpose.

To the delight of the true conformist, many interior designs are stagnating into set themes. But you must take this a step further, and be certain that no new design or decorating ideas are found throughout your home. Do not allow any inspiration to come from, say, your favorite books, magazines, or movies. In fact, stop using any of things for entertainment. They will only lead to further thought “outside the box.”

Use your head people. Actually, do not use it at all, because that is the best way to avoid any originality or sensationalism in any interior design ideas. It is, unfortunately, too easy to find simple inspiration throughout your daily life. It is imperative that you do not write any of these ideas down, and then you will have a chance to forget your initial reaction and idea and move along in your simple, easy, and non-threatening little life.

Interior Design Tips

An interior designer faces many of the same questions when faced with a residential client. Issues such as theme and fundamental style are not frequently an issue with the home client. But there will always be concerns about painting walls, the furniture currently inside the home, and of course the floors. There are tips to alleviate concerns and questions regarding these specific design problems.

“What about this color of paint? It is too bright/dark/soft/etcetera.” The first and best tip to eliminate concerns about paint choices is to purchase a sample of paint to place on the wall. Then, there will be a true understanding of what the actual appearance of a color will be. However, many colors – especially darker ones – attain their true beauty from the look of the entire wall after being layered with several coats of paint.

Trust a color pallet and a designer, but of course only follow intuition. A color that is difficult to stomach may settle eventually to delightful surprise, or it may lead to a horrible bellyache. Only cover a wall with a design’s color that will provide security and happiness in a homeowner.

“Should existing and endurable furniture be reupholstered?” An excellent tip to be considered: evaluate the furniture for style and value versus the cost of the reupholstering. An antique chair that fits the feeling of a formal living room that was purchased for many thousands of dollars would be an excellent candidate as long as replacing the original upholstery did not degrade its value or worth.

“I don’t know what to do about my floor.” Decisions about floor designs should be based on a person’s budget, the room’s use, and personal preference. Certain floor treatments are incredibly expensive, such as hard oak floors, and they may not be practical in an area where stomping kids thrash through the interior. Carefully weigh options such as dying carpet or laying rugs over existing hard floors. It is all a matter of personal preference.

Actually, all interior design should be a matter of personal preference. It is not worth any expense to put something in a home that will force a homeowner to cringe every time he or she looks around.

Let’s face it: not everyone wants a home that looks spanking new. Due to the proliferation of too many homes which are dressed in a predictable contemporary style, people are exploring other options to distance themselves from cookie cutter design. And how do they do this? Some went the road less traveled by opting for unconventional themes like industrial or avant garde. Others decided to introduce a hint of history into their homes – Art Deco, Victorian, Retro-50′s or Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie period fascinates them.

Making an old place new is easy – all you need is spend some money to get it renovated. Dressing up a new place to make it look like it was there for a longer period of time is not so straight-forward, although there are some simple tricks to do this. Antiques and vintage furniture immediately come to mind. But that’s not all to it. Start with the walls. There are plenty of faux painting techniques for achieving a distressed look. Porter’s Original Paints offers many suitable paint products to make the job easier too. Else, there is a wide range of wallpaper design to choose from in the market. For those who are more adventurous, raw materials like battered, unfinished brick walls also add decades to the design.

Color-wise, do take care that you don’t choose something too bright and modern – muted, pastel tones often create a comfortable, nostalgic look. To neat freaks, junk and antiques shops can be like little shops of horror at times. With porcelain vases, well-worn colonial-style window frames and other bric-a-brac strewn on the floor, you wouldn’t think you have a chance to squeeze through to the end of the shop and back without toppling a gramophone. But the fact is you’ll seldom chance upon an artifact of exquisite craftsmanship and rich history unless you really get your hands dirty.

Ornate doors and screens are most commonly used in home decor to add visual interest. Where the theme suits, moldings and mantels add a lot of character to a room that is otherwise just a big white box.

Don’t overlook the finer details too. Vintage or retro accessories and lighting help to unify the entire theme, while shiny aluminum doorknobs and handles just don’t speak ‘old’. Add artwork from the era that inspired your home and you’ll enjoy a living experience which offers the best of yesterday and today.
